Binghamton police chief placed on leave amid sexual harassment claims

BINGHAMTON (AP) - The head of the Binghamton Police Department has been placed on administrative leave amid accusations that he sexually harassed a female officer.

Mayor Rich David announced Monday that the city is conducting an internal investigation into the allegations made against Police Chief Joseph Zikuski by Officer Kristi Sager. David also said he has reached out to an outside agency to review the police department independently.

Sager filed a complaint with the state Division of Human Rights last week, claiming Zikuski made sexual advances toward her, other female members of the department, and the wives of male department members.

The complaint also says disciplinary actions were brought against Sager by the city after she repeatedly turned down the chief’s advances. Zikuski denies the accusations.

City officials say Sager is suspended pending termination for leaving the scene of an accident.
