Grass and brush fires reported despite burn ban
NORWICH – At least three grass and brush fires were called into the Chenango County 911 call center on Monday, prompting authorities to remind county residents of the current burn ban still in effect.
With the arrival of mild temperatures, many property owners are eager to get out an do some “spring cleaning,” but if that includes the common practice of burning yard debris as a form of disposal – it'll have to wait, according to the ban.
Monday’s call to 107 Pratt Rd. in the Town of Norwich was caused by such an instance, and resulted in approximately one half-acre of scorched lawn.
Another call to South New Berlin firefighters stemmed from a resident burning trash, which was quickly out of control when combined with Monday's wind gusts, and yet another was reported at 3400 County Road 32 in Oxford.
