Holmquist tabbed new S-E varsity football coach

SHERBURNE – After serving on the varsity coaching staff the past nine seasons, Edward Holmquist was tabbed by the Sherburne-Earlville district earlier this week as its next varsity head coach.
Holmquist, a 1991 Norwich High School graduate, has 19 years of football coaching experience. He takes over for Mike Jasper, who guided the Marauders to Section III postseason appearances in each of the past three seasons.
“We’re really excited about the direction our program is headed,” Holmquist said. “Our kids and coaching staff work extremely hard year-round to make sure that we are ready for the season. We’ve made significant strides over the past few years. Our kids have seen some of the best competition in Central New York, and I think the younger guys are starting to see the commitment and dedication it takes to play at a championship level.”
The Marauders got off to an eye-popping 4-0 start a season ago before dropping three of their final four contests, including a first-round exit in the sectional playoffs for a third year in a row.
“On the field, our expectations remain the same,” Holmquist said. “We’re going to play hard. We’re going to be physical. We’re going to strive to win football games and try to win a division title.”
This season, the 2013 Class C East champion Marauders will make the switch to Section III Class C West. Opponents will see plenty of new faces as S-E must replace several multi-year starters including all-state linebacker and record-setting quarterback Cody Marango, and All-League players such as fullback and linebacker Garrett Duvall, wide receiver and cornerback Ben Khoury, and linemen Jonah Piatti and Damien McGregor.
“Those guys were instrumental in our success the past few years, but this is high school football, guys graduate, and we’ve got to move on,” Holmquist said. “You only hope that the younger guys learn from the example those seniors set. Those guys worked their tails off and did great things, you just hope the underclassmen saw what it takes to play for championships and that they want to raise the bar that’s been set.”
The Marauders will return offensive MVP Matt Hull, all-league tight end Gavin Giroux, and running back Brodie Roebuck, plus several guys who saw time along the offensive front, including Hunter Hatton, Tanner Campbell and Gavin Paul.
“Our kids are working hard, especially a lot of the younger freshmen and sophomores,” Holmquist said. “Our program is getting stronger each year, and it’s our hope that we can continue that trend. The effort is certainly there. Our offseason participation is higher than ever, and we hope we see that pay off this fall.”
The Marauders open the season on the road in a non-league contest against Holland Patent on Sept. 5 at 2 p.m.
