Two-vehicle MVA in Oxford leads to DWI charge, another injured

OXFORD – Chenango County sheriff's deputies responded to the scene of a two-car MVA in the Town of Oxford Thursday evening that left one person injured and another charged with DWI.
According to authorities, 31-year-old Heather Bradley of Binghamton was traveling northbound on State Route 12, just north of the NY-220/NY-12 intersection near 4504 State Highway 12, when a second vehicle operated by Richard C. Swanson of Staten Island entered her lane.
Sheriff's deputies say that Swanson's half-ton GMC pickup failed to yield the right of way, forcing Bradley's Ford Explorer to come into contact with Swanson's vehicle.
The incident closed down both north and southbound traffic on Route 12 for approximately one hour as crews from Oxford Fire and Ambulance worked to extricate Bradley and clear the scene. Through traffic was diverted to County Road 32, East River Road.
Oxford Fire Chief Hans Franklin indicated that because of the severity of the impact, it took crews longer than usual to extricate the female victim.
While no life-threatening injuries were sustained, Bradley was transported via Oxford ambulance to UHS–Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for minor injuries.
According to scanner reports, Swanson was administered a field sobriety test on scene and later arrested and charged for Driving While Intoxicated by investigation officer Deputy Hitt of the Chenango Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to vehicle property damage, a fire hydrant along the west side of State Highway 12 was completely removed from its base as a result of impact from one of the vehicles.
