Frontier urges homeowners and contractors to dig safely
NORWICH – Frontier Communications is reminding residents to know their grounds before they dig.
With construction season underway, homeowners and construction companies are starting projects both large and small. But with construction comes the risk of digging into buried utility lines, so all are encouraged to call 811 before picking up a shovel.
By calling 811, homeowners and contractors are immediately connected to their state’s one-call center which notifies the appropriate utility of a party’s intent to dig. Locators can then mark the location of underground lines at no cost to the homeowner or contractor.
“As we enter spring, we remind homeowners and professional contractors alike to call 811 before digging in order to eliminate the risk of striking an underground utility line,” said Claudia Maroney, General Manager for Central New York, Frontier Communications. “After a long winter, people are eager to be outside and start projects; but before doing so, we ask them to take a minute to call 811 and request a utility locate. Requests may be made 24 hours a day, seven days a week and the locate work is done at no charge. Calling 811 is the only way to know which utilities are buried in your area.”
Striking a power line can cause significant injury and damage, and result in repair costs, fines, and outages. Because depth of buried power lines can vary, even minor digging warrants a call to 811.
