Hagenbuch leads Norwich girls to REK team title
Track and Field
NORWICH – Norwich's girls won their second invitational championship in as many weekends Friday night led by senior Morgan Hagenbuch.
Hagenbuch was named the most outstanding female athlete at the REK Invitational, hosted by the Purple Tornado. She won the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, and captured the long jump with a new meet record (16-11). Hagenbuch would have had a fourth victory in the 400-meter relay; however, the NHS team was disqualified when a handoff occurred outside of the legal zone.
Hagenbuch, a division one gymnastics recruit by Brown, has taken some of the principles of her number one sport to the track. "The rhythm and steps (from gymnastics) have transferred very well to her jumping and hurdling," said Norwich coach Shaun Horan.
Norwich spread out its top finishes with thrower Katelyn Shaver sweeping the shot put and discus; Caroline Stewart captured the triple jump, and Norwich added a comfortable victory in the 3,200-meter relay. "We have so much versatility, and that's been a real key to this team," Horan said.
Elsewhere, B-G's Katie Nolan shattered the 800-meter record by nearly three seconds winning in 2:17.60, and Sidney's Ariyahna Bernard tied the meet record in the high jump clearing 5-2.
Norwich polled 168 points to nearly double the output of runner-up Sidney (89 points).
Morrisville-Eaton, led by most outstanding male athlete Brad Smalley, captured the boys' team championship. M-E scored 107 points to best Norwich by 13 points.
Smalley won or shared four wins – 40 total points – to help his team edge by a balanced Tornado lineup that was buoyed by several top-three finishes.
Ben Ericksen had Norwich's lone first-place triumph running a season-best 10:57.86 to win the 3,200 meters by less than a second.
Sidney senior Austin Dean set new meet records in the discus (154-9) and shot put (45-10 1/4) making his own case for most outstanding male athlete. Norwich junior David Bernstein was a runner-up in each event, and Bernstein's second-place shot put heave of 45-3 3/4 also surpassed the previous meet record.
