Letter: NHS grid legend ‘Bunky’ Morris dies at age 95
Sadly, I have been informed of the death of Leland “Bunky” Morris. Morris, who starred as a halfback on the immortal undefeated, untied and unscored upon 1937 Norwich High School football team, died Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the age of 95.
Following his graduation from Norwich, Morris went on to be a triple-threat – pass, run and kick – star at Syracuse University from where he graduated in 1946, after having his SU career interrupted by WWII. He later played professional football for the Washington Redskins.
Morris and his 1937 teammates were honored on May 12, 2012 with their enshrinement in the Norwich High School Sports Hall of Fame. At that time, eight team members were still living. Besides Morris, time has claimed five others – Elmo Robertson (Nov. 18, 2012), Don Collier (Mar. 23, 2013), Jim Rotundo (Jan. 20, 2014), Salvatore “Toots” Mirabito (June 20, 2014) and Jim Georgeson (Oct. 22, 2014), leaving only Fred Johnson of Binghamton and Dominic J. Zieno of Lyons.
