Schumer advocates for new laws to stop gun trafficking

NEW YORK – United States Senator Charles Schumer is pushing for new federal gun regulations to restrict the flow of stolen and illegally-trafficked guns from state to state.
Schumer announced on Wednesday a proposal to crackdown on the “Iron Pipeline,” a term given to illicit gun-trafficking. He is urging the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to implement a new strategy to hone in on the pipeline.
There’s a great deal of concern particularly in southern states, where he argues lax gun laws make it easier for gun runners to bring illegal firearms into New York City, said Schumer.
He proposes a three-fold initiative: strengthening the ATF’s National Tracing Center to better trace guns; eliminating the Tiahrt ammendment, which restricts the ATF from sharing trace data with law enforcement and the public; and hiring a permanent director for the ATF that can lead these efforts.
The announcement comes in response to the shooting death of NYPD Officer Brian Moore. The gun used in Moore’s death was found to be a product of the Iron Pipeline.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and fellow officers of NYPD hero Brian Moore, who was tragically killed by a cowardly criminal using an illegal gun exported to New York City from gun law-lax Georgia via the so-called ‘iron pipeline,’” Schumer said. “The feds, especially the ATF, must step up the campaign to cut-off that pipeline and I will fight to get them the resources and enhanced capabilities to do just that.”
According to the NYPD, 85 percent of New York City guns used in crimes come from out of state and 90 percent of New York City crime guns are totally illegal.
