ONEONTA – On the strength of Zan Stewart and Colin Stewart's third straight doubles championship, combined with a pair of third-place finishes, Norwich captured its fifth straight Section IV Class B championship Friday at Oneonta High School.
Seniors Brendon Budd and Alec Weaver cruised to victory in their third-place finish, and senior Matt Craig added his third third-place finish in singles in what was the tournament's final match of the day.
"It definitely is impressive (winning five straight titles)," said Norwich head coach, John Stewart. "We controlled our own destiny over the two days; you can't control the draw and how things are picked out of the hat, but once you start playing, winning takes care of everything."
In capturing their third straight Class B title, the Stewarts surrendered just five total games in three matches. In the finals, they beat Maine-Endwell's Stephen Pham and John Munley for the second straight year taking the battle, 6-2, 6-1.
Budd and Weaver lost to Pham and Munley in the semifinals, but rebounded for third to earn a spot in the Section IV state qualifier. The Norwich tandem toppled Maine-Endwell's second doubles entry, Connor Cummings and Griffin Goosman, 6-2, 6-3.
"They just came back strong and played to their level and above," said coach Stewart of Weaver and Budd.
Meanwhile, Craig had to shake off a three-set semifinals loss to Oneonta's Jonah Herold to secure third place and the Norwich team victory.
Craig dominated Oneonta eighth-grader Kyle Rowe, 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation finals to wrap up the NHS crown.
"Losing in the semifinals was a big disappointment for Matt," John Stewart said. "But the reality is that he had to come back and win his third-place match, and for the third time in his career, he did it."
Stewart noted that every player in the sectional team lineup contributed points to the final total with the third-place consolation matches Friday proving the most significant. "The beauty of this team is that everyone did their part," Stewart said.
Norwich competes in the state qualifier Friday, May 22 at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Colin Stewart and Zan Stewart are defending Section IV doubles champions.
