Bennett and Dawson cruise to golf title
PLYMOUTH – Justin Bennett and Craig Dawson shot a bogey-free 6-under-par 65 to capture the men's division of the inaugural Greater Norwich Golf Hall of Fame best ball tournament, Saturday at Canasawacta Country Club.
Dawson, a Sidney High School graduate, is quickly making a habit of bogey-free rounds at CCC events. This past August, Dawson played three bogey-free rounds with Matt Burrell to capture the annual men's member-guest tournament.
Bennett and Dawson had a relatively uneventful front nine in the best ball format with a single birdie on the front nine. From there, the birdies flew over the final nine with red numbers posted on 10, 11, 13, 16, and 18.
Alone in second with a 2-under-par 69 was the team of Tim Mirabito and Tom Muserilli. The local CCC duo had a 4-under front nine, but failed to capitalize on the strong start.
Bob Curri and Alan Cafrung, playing CCC for the first time, shot a 2-under-par 69 to win the senior division. Curri and Cafrung eagled the 18th hole to tie John Benware and Richard Rivanera.
A playoff would have determined first place; however, Benware and Rivanera returned to the Triple Cities area after the round defaulting first place to Curri and Cafrung.
In the three-team women's division, Krista Porter and Kathi Wagner shot an 86 to win by six strokes.
"We decided last fall to see what could we do to get more play, and in amateur golf it's tough to get people to play their own ball in tournaments," said GNGHOF committee member Mark DeMellier, explaining the best ball format. "We had 52 players in three divisions, and we're just going to make it grow."
Contributing sponsors to the tournament were Blueox, Denny's Liquors, Joe McBride, McLaughlin's, Mody Real Estate, New York Central Mutual, Nina's of Norwich; Peggy Parker Real Estate, Roma's of Oxford, Skillin's Jewelers, Wilson Funeral Home, Canasawacta Country Club, BTI Travel, Earlville Paper Box, McCredy Motors, Mid York Press, NBT Bank, Nina's Italian Grill, Sherburne; Norwich Beverage, Reese-Marshall, Service Pharmacy, The Stadium Sports Bar & Grill.
