‘Not-your-typical’ square dancing at DCMO BOCES

NORWICH – Let's face it, finding something to do may sometimes be a struggle in Chenango County for adults and youth alike, but soon the adult community will benefit from unique and entertaining opportunity to get out and dance... Square Dance, that is.
While Chenango County is in need for a nightlife scene for adults 18 and older, Norwich resident and entrepreneur Dan Foust believes that Modern Western Square Dancing is an answer.
Foust has been square dancing for 40 years and dances both the traditional male and female positions of square dancing through the advanced level.
An extension of his pastime, Foust has recently begun his tenure as an amateur square dance caller, and is eager to share and teach his love for square dancing to our local community.
With that in mind, Foust has established a Basic Mainstream Modern Western Square Dance class slated to begin Saturday, June 6 from 3 – 5 p.m. at the DCMO–BOCES Norwich Campus located at 6678 County Road 32.
“Modern Square Dancing provides a safe, alcohol and drug free environment where the community can get together to meet new friends, and spend hours of recreation, exercise, entertainment and fellowship,” said Foust. “This is not your grandma and grandpa's traditional barn dance.”
Foust explains that the instruction will include traditional dance formations set to modern music such as Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson among others. Dancers are encouraged to come as they are, and dress in comfortable street attire.
According to Foust, Modern Square Dance is broken down into multiple levels starting with Basic and Mainstream and progressing to the Plus, Advanced and Challenge levels.
“Our goal, if we can find a dance hall, is to teach enough dancers to form a local square dance club called the Leatherstocking Squares that will dance one evening a week throughout the year,” said Foust.
Foust says that a partner is not necessary, and single dancers can will be placed with a random partner to dance with. “This will be an accepting class and the invitation is open to everyone with the hopes that each dancer will learn both positions of dance – traditional 'boy' and 'girl' positions,” said Foust.
“It's math, it's spatial relations, it's people puzzles. Believe me, this isn't what you did in high school – and the fitness-minded – it has been found that 762 calories are burned in two hours of square dancing; so it's cardio too,” He added.
According to a June 19, 2003 article in the New England Journal of Medicine, there is growing evidence that stimulating one's mind by dancing can ward off Alzheimer's disease and dementia, much as physical exercise can keep the body fit, and dancing also increases cognitive acuity at all ages.
