General Clinton Canoe Regatta HOF Bios

The General Clinton Canoe Regatta will induct six new members into its Hall of Fame Saturday, May 23. Below is a brief bio on each honoree:

• Jan Whittaker, West Henrietta, N.Y.: First female to compete in the 70-mile race in 1971. Fourteen finishes in mixed competition; also won 19 U.S. Canoe marathon races in various races.
• Calvin Hassel, Grand Island, Neb.: One of the country's most acclaimed canoe racers who is a 20-time, 70-mile finisher as a C-1 or C-2 competitor. Won the C-1 pro race in 1998, 2006. Has more than 40 national titles and over 500 wins in races of all distances.
• Mike Packard, Oneonta: Thirty 70-miles finishes including 11 in C-1 where he placed third three times in the pro division. Since the late 1990s, has chaired he Generation Gap races and remains active on the Regatta committee.
• Rodney Robinson, Otego: As much a force on the Regatta organization as actually padding in races. Has 30 finishes of 70 miles, 11 in C-1 pro with with various partners. Was 1982 aluminum champion with John Winn.
• Dick Sloane, Bainbridge (deceased): Original Regatta committee member and past chairman. Longtime volunteer in many capacities.
• Don Louden, Bainbridge (deceased): Original Regatta committee member, member of finance committee for new Regatta Park. Assumed chairmanship of the park and oversaw its construction.
