70 bags of heroin found in false bottom can
NEW BERLIN – A New Berlin man sits in the Chenango County Correctional Facility following a ‘no knock’ warrant executed Thursday.
Nathaniel G. Sherwood, 31, was arrested and taken into custody after authorities entered a residence on Great Brook Potter Road in the Town of New Berlin.
Members of the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office said the search warrant stemmed from a lengthy investigation into the sales of heroin and cocaine in Chenango County.
The CCSO Narcotics Division and road patrol deputies entered the residence at approximately 11:20 a.m. Thursday.
Upon entry and search, police said there were approximately 70 packets of heroin located inside of a false bottom can.
According to authorities, a false bottom can an item that represents an actual can of soda but the inside is a storage compartment typically used to hide narcotics or cash from law enforcement.
“In addition to the heroin, the Sheriff’s Office also recovered more than $2,000 in cash, a digital scale, and seized a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle,” read a release from the CCSO.
Authorities said that throughout the investigation, key information was shared between the CCSO and the Norwich Police Department. Joseph McBride, Chenango County District Attorney, also assisted with the case.
Sherwood was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in the third degree, a class B felony.
He was arraigned in the Town of New Berlin Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
Sherwood is set to appear in court again at a later date.
