Deborah Whitman received a DEC grant from the Chenango Arts Council for the purpose of creating the mural on the south facing facade of Nina's on South Broad Street. Whitman chose the theme of the canal boat when she learned that Italian stone carvers were brought to NY to install the stone locks for the canal system. The boat is colored in the Italian flag colors.
