Concerns of flooding loom after Friday storm

CHENANGO COUNTY – While many county residents are still reeling from the damage caused by a series of storms that swept through the region on Friday, emergency personnel have their eye on potential flooding as more rain is forecasted for today.
A flash flood watch for the south-eastern portions of Chenango County was canceled by the National Weather Service early Monday morning. The latest weather statement issued by the NWS of Binghamton notes rainfall coverage and rates that have “dropped off significantly, and impacts from earlier flash flooding will continue to wane.”
However, with many areas still heavily saturated from rainfall on Friday and Saturday, there’s still a risk of minor flooding in some areas, according to Chenango County emergency personnel.
“Certainly if we get heavy rains over the same areas, we could have trouble,” said A. Jones of the Chenango County Emergency Operations Center. “It’s one of those things that can be difficult to predict. The potential is there, it just depends on where the rain falls.”
Multiple departments were out in full force on Friday when the storm system caused widespread damage throughout the county, especially in the towns of Oxford, Norwich, Plymouth, Preston and New Berlin. Jones said the Chenango dispatch center fielded nearly 200 phone calls over a three-hour period, mostly reports of trees and tree limbs fallen on roadways, houses, and power lines.
Despite a tornado watch issued by the NWS early Friday morning, there was no evidence of tornado damage. Even so, high winds of 60-70 miles per hour caused a good deal of general damage and left 25 percent of the county – approximately 5,000 residents – without power Friday evening. The Norwich Family YMCA opened its doors to people who were affected.
“It was a decent storm,” said Jones. “It takes quite a bit to knock out power to 25 percent of the county.”
Only 10 percent of those without power on Friday still had no power by Saturday. All but one county resident had power restored by Sunday evening.
The National Weather Service has cautioned residents to continue to monitor the forecast closely over the next few days since the ground is saturated and there will be more showers and thunderstorms.
