Boxing greats visit Oneonta
ONEONTA – This Saturday, June 20, the Oneonta Theatre will be hosting an event that will be fun for the whole family. It will be a celebration for the audio book release of “Meet Marvis Frazier - The Story of The Son of Smokin’ Joe.”
The book is an autobiography of Marvis Frazier’s life as a boxer and life after boxing, co-written by local author Jamie Potter. The book chronicles the life of Frazier as a boxer, both professionally and a stellar amateur career, and his life after boxing.
“The book follows a lot of what Frazier did as a boxer,” said co-author Potter. “It also follows Frazier’s life after boxing and his battle with depression.”
Potter added that he has since went on to become very good friends with the Frazier family. “When I began my career as a writer, I didn’t expect to be writing about boxing,” marveled Potter. “Now I love it.”
In the book, Frazier – the son of Hall of Famer and legendary champion Joe Frazier – talks about living up to his father’s shadow and his two most remembered fights against Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson.
Potter mentioned that since Frazier and Holmes’ fight, they have remained good friends.
Potter and Frazier’s book was released two years ago on hard cover and has since been released in paper back and as an ebook. The event this weekend is a kick-off for the release of the audio book.
“We got a couple local Oneonta actors to do a dramatic reading for the audio book,” said Potter. “Marvis also reads in the book as well.”
Potter went on to say that they had turned the book into a show for the release. “We got a singing group to help perform the show as well as Marvis and his former rival, heavyweight champ Larry Holmes,” said Potter. Frazier and Holmes will be performing as well as roasting Frazier after the show. “Larry will roast Marvis and I’m sure that Marvis has a few stories about Larry as well,” continued Potter. In addition to the show, there will be a meet and greet afterward.
Potter hinted that there were a couple of surprises in store for fans as well.
Hoping to fill the theater, tickets will be priced at $15 at the door but $10 in advance for adults, children 12 and under will be free. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Pie in The Sky in Otego.
“We invite everybody, it doesn’t matter if they are a boxing fan or not, to come out and enjoy the show,” said Potter.
