YMCA Kids Club kicks off next week

NORWICH – Monday July 6 is the official start of summer for many children in the area as the Norwich Family YMCA’s Kids Club kicks off their summer program.
Running from Monday until mid August, Kids Club is a program that is much more than summer fun for the kids. Kids Club is for children ages three to five that offers many different activities and programs. Director of Kids Club Gabrielle Testani explained that parents can sign up their kids for just one day or as many days as they want.
“It’s on a first come first serve basis,” said Testani. “Monday morning we’re expecting 10 to 12 kids.”
Testani and Assistant Director Salli Franck explained that throughout the summer there will be “themed” weeks. “The first week is going to be about summer,” said Testani. “We’re going to be doing some activities and crafts that coincide with the theme.” Testani went on to say that they will be doing a craft each day and reading a story that will go along with the theme.
In addition to the crafts and stories the children will be swim every Monday and Friday at the pool at the YMCA and every Wednesday they will walk to the Guernsey Memorial Library. “We wanted to take the kids to the library so they could use the playground and read some of the books,” explained Testani. “We really want to get the kids involved with reading.”
Reading will be a common theme for the program throughout the summer. “The kids can do ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar Reading Challenge,’” said Testani. “Every week the parents can record how many books their kids read or they read to their kids.” Testani went on to explain that they will then “feed” the books to their own paper caterpillar which is hanging on the wall outside of the pre-school classroom.
Testani and Franck have said that the main goal for the program is to provide structure and social interaction for the kids. “We really also want it to be something fun for the kids to do this summer,” said Testani. For more information on how to sign up, please inquire at the front desk at the Norwich Family YMCA or give them a call at 336-9622.
