State partners with Avis to steer motorists away from distracted driving
ALBANY – A new partnership between New York State and the Avis Budget Group aims to crack down on instances of distracted driving across the state.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a partnership with Avis to launch two public service announcements which warn of the dangers of texting while driving. As part of the agreement, Avis will feature the public service announcements on its online reservation confirmation pages for customers renting a vehicle with Avis Car Rental or Budget Car Rental in New York State.
Avis is a leading global provider of vehicle rental services.
According to New York State traffic safety data, the number of tickets issued in the state for texting violations increased from roughly 9,000 to nearly 76,000 between 2011 and 2014 – a nearly 744 percent increase.
In a statement, Cuomo said he hopes the initiative will help drivers take more responsibility behind the wheel.
“Through this partnership, we are making the message heard loud and clear: distracted driving is reckless, potentially life-threatening and has no place on New York’s roadways,” said Cuomo. “I encourage all New Yorkers to put down their phones, stay alert and drive responsibly.”
