Chenango DA gets outpouring of support at campaign fundraiser

GREENE – Dozens of supporters turned out for a campaign fundraiser for District Attorney Joseph McBride at the Silo Restaurant in Greene on Thursday.
McBride, who has served the position of Chenango County DA for 16 years, filed more than 2,300 petition signatures from Chenango County Republicans and Conservatives this week, ensuring his place on the ballot for the Sept. 10 Republican primary vote.
Being challenged for the first time in his public career by 30-year-old Assistant Public Defender Zachary Wentworth (R), McBride used Thursday’s event to speak a clear message: “There is no substitute for experience.”
“These are serious times that call for a serious and experienced leader,” said McBride, citing his 30-year career which includes 16 years as District Attorney. In that time, McBride touts a record of prosecuting more than 1,600 felony cases and trying more than 60 grand trials (including all Chenango County homicide cases over the last 16 years).
McBride also pointed to two open homicide cases in the county that are set for trial (one in September and the other in January) as well as a growing roster of convictions relative to the heroin epidemic in and around the Chenango County community.
“Our community is truly one worth fighting for ... We cannot – and will not – be soft on crime in Chenango County,” he added.
Among supporters at Thursday’s event were Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, and guest speaker Chemung County Sheriff and 2014 New York State Lieutenant Governor candidate Chris Moss.
Moss, who helped Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino take 42 upstate counties in last year’s race for governor, lauded McBride for his stance against portions of the SAFE Act and other proposed legislation that he says inhibit second ammendment rights.
A primary election will be held Thursday, Sept. 10 with general elections taking place Tuesday, Nov. 3. Chenango County District Attorney is a four-year term position to which McBride was elected in 1999 and previously ran unopposed in 2003, 2007, and 2011.
