Bainbridge Streakers teams capture championships
ONEONTA - On Saturday August, 1, five U15 teams met at Neahwa Park in Oneonta to compete for the Oneonta City Fastpitch Softball championship. Unatego, Oxford, Laurens, Harpursville, and Bainbridge all met to play for the top spot.
In the first round Oxford and Unatego played in what would be a hard fought win for Unatego. Unatego then faced Bainbridge in the first semi-final game; which Bainbridge captured after a 21-3 victory. In the second game was Laruens and Harpursville, with Harpursville coming out on top.
Scoring 12 runs in the first three innings the Bainbridge Streakers U15 dominated their first game from the start. The Streakers batters easily handled Unatego pitching as eight hitters combined for 15 hits, 14 RBIs, and 21 runs scored. Alli Miller recorded the win for the Streakers in the circle, allowing two runs over three innings striking out six, walking one, and giving up one hit. The combined effort put the Streakers into the championship game against Harpursville later in the day.
Capturing the title 10-2, the Streakers scored early and often putting up six runs in the first two innings. In the first a walk by Kass Davy, an RBI single by Alexis Carr, and a walk by Morgan Neidig all put runs on the board for Bainbridge. The Streakers scored much in the same way in the second with an RBI double by Kori Thornton, an RBI single by Brie Barber, and a fielder's choice bringing
runners home. The Streakers defense held strong as well, only allowing two runs the whole game.
Alli Miller was in the circle once again and throwing well to keep Bainbridge’s lead alive. Miller kept the Harpursville batters scoreless until the fifth inning when they scored one of their only two runs the entire game. 12 strikeouts, two earned runs, three hits, and two walks over seven innings led the way for a rout against Harpursville. Miller’s combined work pitching and in the batters box earned her the title of MVP for the tournament.
Scoring their last four runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the game was all but over for the Streakers. After two more innings and one last ditch effort in the seventh by Harpursville, scoring one run, the game ended and Bainbridge went home champions.
The day continued on as the U18 teams began play. Just like the U15 team, the U18 team captured top honors as well. Unatego, Davenport, Harpursville, Milford, Oneonta, and Bainbridge would all play in the U18 tournement.
The Streakers U18 team would face Harpursville in their first game of the tournament. The Streakers offense struggled early against the Harpursville pitching, only scoring one run in the first two innings, but eventually found their stride to score two in the fourth and increase their lead to 4-0.
Smith kept Unatego scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when they scored on a wild pitch, but the outcome would remain the same wtih the Streakers coming out on top.
In the championship game Bainbridge would beat Oneonta 10-4 to capture the title. Bainbridge fell behind early as Oneonta was up 3-0 going into the bottom of the second inning but the Streakers held fast and put up six runs to double thier opponents score. The Bainbridge defense only allowed one more run to be scored for Oneonta the rest of the game, but the same could not be said for Bainbridge who scored in every inning but one the rest of the game. For the Streakers Kori Thornton got it done in the circle on the way to a win. She allowed four runs over seven innings. She also struck out 10, walked five and surrendered six hits.
