State police start crackdown on speeding
CHENANGO COUNTY – Speeders beware. New York State Police will be out in full force this week in a statewide crackdown to slow down speeders and aggressive drivers.
The week-long enforcement initiative began Wednesday and will continue through Aug. 11.
Blamed for causing 352 deaths and nearly 19,000 injuries in speed-related crashes in New York State in 2013, speeding is a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatal accidents statewide.
This summer’s “Speed Week” will use both marked state police vehicles and concealed identity traffic enforcement vehicles as part of the operation. Concealed identity vehicles, which blend in with everyday traffic, allow state troopers to more easily identify motorists who are violating laws while driving.
Troopers will also be watching for other traffic violations, including distracted or impaired drivers, occupants who are not properly buckled, and drivers who are violating New York’s Move Over law.
During the August 2014 Speed Week campaign, State Police issued more than 22,000 traffic tickets. More than 10,000 of those tickets were for speeding (869 of which were in the Southern Tier), and more than 600 were for violations of the Move Over law (125 of which were in the Southern Tier).
