Gov. calls for committee to examine issues in Common Core
ALBANY – With the start of a new school year now less than a week away, the debate over Common Core is flaring up again.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Thursday that while he’s on board with the mission of the controversial Common Core standards, he’s in disagreement with how they were rolled out by the State Education Department, calling the implementation “deeply flawed.”
“A growing chorus of experts have questioned the intelligence of SED’s Common Core program and objective educators across the state have found the implementation problematic, to say the least,” Cuomo said, adding that he sympathizes with the frustration felt by parents across the state. “The fact is that the current Common Core program in New York is not working, and must be fixed.”
