What’s new for the 21st annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival
NORWICH – Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival in downtown Norwich will be this weekend, Saturday Sept. 12th and Sunday Sept. 13th.
This year’s Colorscape will feature a new Art Zone Stage which will run throughout the weekend.
According to a press release about the event: “There will be Magic by Michael, Catskill Puppet Theater, storytelling by Rainer Morgan, Linda Kertzman, and Story Laurie, as well as interactive workshops with the Norwich Theater Company.”
The Art Zone Stage complements the existing Art Zones 1 that offers hands-on arts activities for children, pre-school through age 9. The new Art Zone Stage will be located next to Art Zone 1 on 27 W. Main St.
“The new Art Zone Stage resulted from a concerted effort by Colorscape board members, volunteers, and members of the community who wanted to enhance the Colorscape experience by offering a performance art element,” said Colorscape Interim Executive Director Donna Dvoracek. “We’re excited to open the new Art Zone Stage along with the fact that this year, we’re hosting more artists than ever before.”
Colorscape will also have over 120 juried artists this year who will exhibit their artwork, and in many instances, demonstrate their craft as well.
“We’re pleased to showcase so many fine artists,” said Visual Arts Coordinator and Executive Director Peggy Finnegan. “This year includes a nice mix of returning artists along with many new artists.”
Exhibits include ceramics, drawings, pastels, fiber, glass, jewelry, metalworks, mixed media, oil and acrylic paintings, photography, sculpture, watercolors, wearable fiber, and wood.
Colorscape has long been recognized as one of the best artist-friendly festivals in central New York. Sunshine Artist, America’s premier art and craft show magazine, detailed Colorscape’s exceptional commitment to artists in its February 2015 issue.
Based on a 10-point scale, Colorscape management received a 9.9 overall rating, artist treatment a 10.0, and artist amenities received an 8.8. Other aspects of the event also received eight or better ratings for: attendance, advertising, quality of work, balance of mediums, prestige of show, layout, load-in/out, and parking.
“This is probably my favorite show because it is a show for artists by artists, and we are treated remarkably well by the management, volunteers, and community,” said one of the artists involved.
Colorscape kicks off Saturday at 9 a.m. with the second annual Color Dash, a 5K fun run and walk.
There will also be a Colorscape poetry slam on Saturday from 2-5 p.m. at Park Place restaurant, as well as live music and vendors throughout the weekend.
All are welcome to attend the festival free of charge.
