Basic amateur radio training slated for October
NORWICH – The Chenango Valley Amateur Radio Association, Inc. (CVARA) will be hosting a class in Amateur Radio for all age groups starting Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015 at the Emergency Operations Center, 18 E. Main St., Norwich, NY.
The course will run for three Saturdays – Oct. 3, Oct. 10, and Oct. 24, 2015 – providing students with the basic information on the use and science of Amateur Radio.
Amateur Radio has become the backbone of emergency communications in the United States; ham radio facilitates assistance in local disasters, as in the recent flooding that took throughout Chenango County.
Training in Morse Code is no longer required, and communications with the International Space Station are possible.
Classes will run from 8 a.m. – noon each Saturday, and the license testing session will immediately follow the Oct. 24, 2015 classroom session, commencing at approximately 1p.m.
Pre-Registration requested, but a limited number of walk-ins will be accepted. For more information concerning registration and purchase of textbooks, testing date etc., contact Ray Darling (K2DAR) by phone or e-mail as listed below or John Rudolph (N2YP) 437-2435.
The instructors for the course will be ARRL Certified Instructor Ray Darling with Assistant Instructors Tom Monday and John Rudolph.
Sessions will feature both classroom and hands-on learning.
After completing the course, students that pass an FCC exam will earn the Amateur Radio Technician and/or General class license. The only course fee is your cost of purchasing the appropriate textbook. To take the exam, a $15 fee is mandatory, due the morning of the exam and two forms of identification. As incentives to take the Technician Course & exam, CVARA will offer a free 1-year membership to CVARA, Inc. upon passing the exam.
