Columbus readies for Thursday’s candidate forum

COLUMBUS – Unlike many towns, Columbus this year has competition for open seats on the Town Board, Justice, Supervisor, and Highway Superintendent.
To allow voters to hear from these candidates and size them up, the Columbus Town Board is sponsorng a Meet The Candidates Night Thursday evening at the Whitney House, next door to the Columbus Community Church.
The Candidate forum will start at 7 p.m.
"I think the Town Board deserves some credit for the large field of candidates," Town Supervisor Tom Grace said. "Months ago, we sent out a letter, advising our residents which positions would need to be filled this year, and the salaries paid for each job. Judging from the response, it seems the letter was well-read."
Running for Highway Superintendent are Bob Curtis and Kevin Cross. Candidates for Town Supervisor are Richard Fornito, who resigned as justice last summer, and Tom Grace.
Pam Weidman, Marsha Guzewich, Michael Simons and Gary Dow are vying for two seats on the Town Board.
Justice candidates are Michael Anson and Eileen May.
The only candidate with no challenger is Town Clerk Brenda Weidman, who also serves as the Town's tax collector.
The forum will be moderated by former Unadilla Valley Central School District Clerk Donna Taylor. Her husband, the Rev. Charles Taylor, will serve as time-keeper. The Whitney House was made available to the Town by the Rev. Stephen Reese of the Columbus Community Church.
