Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to check for sex offenders before trick-or-treating

CHENANGO COUNTY – Throughout the county, there are approximately 172 registered sex offenders. The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office wants to ensure that residents know where sex offenders live with trick-or-treating approaching.
The CCSO offers online access to OffenderWatch, a sex offender mapping and notification service. The intentions of OffenderWatch are to aid citizens in avoiding homes that are potentially dangerous.
Chenango County Sheriff Ernest R. Cutting Jr. said, “We do the best we can in making sure sex offenders live where they tell us, so it is crucial that our citizens visit our website [chenangosheriff.us] to see who the registered sex offenders are and where they are living.”
Residents are urged to check any addresses where they or their families spend time. OffenderWatch pinpoints exactly where a registered sex offender lives.
An additional feature is the ability to sign up to receive free notifications automatically via email if a registered sex offender moves within a specified radius of an address typed into the system.
“If you aren’t planning on trick-or-treating in your neighborhood, but will be in a different neighborhood, register that address beforehand so you know which houses to avoid,” said Cutting. “You can register any and all addresses where your children spend time. For example: friends’, grandparent’s, or babysitter’s addresses.”
As soon as a new offender has registered with the CCSO, alerts are sent out in real-time via email.
“The benefit of registering for this free, confidential email alert service is that is allows us to monitor important addresses for you, thereby keeping you up to date concerning newly registered offenders and making it unnecessary for you to have to check important addresses daily or even weekly,” said Cutting.
While the addresses of level one sex offenders are not available, the level two and level three offenders will be mapped and listed. According to Chenango County Undersheriff Daniel Frair, level one offenders have been determined to be the least likely to reoffend.
Level two offenders have been determined to have a moderate risk of re-offending, and level three offenders are the most likely to re-offend.
To find OffenderWatch, visit chenangosheriff.us and click the link ‘Sex Offender Watch’ and follow the on-screen instructions to check neighborhood offenders. To receive alerts via email, click on ‘Register for Email Alerts.’
Cutting and the entire staff at the CCSO encourage everyone to have a fun and safe Halloween. Knowing where the registered sex offenders reside in your area can help make the best choices for safe and fun Halloween activities.
