The Place’s wreath fundraiser, ornament workshops kindle holiday spirit

NORWICH – The Christian Neighborhood Center of Norwich (aka “The Place”) is continuing an annual tradition that brings the holiday spirit to your doorstep.
In hopes of raising funds to support programming and continue its mission of fostering a community where children, teens, and families are nurtured, The Place is again soliciting holiday wreaths throughout the greater Norwich area. The holiday wreathe fundraiser is one of The Place’s topmost fundraising efforts of the year, according to coordinators.
“The sale of these festive wreaths, handmade with care by our staff and a dedicated group of volunteers, provides a tremendous support for the great work that our KIDS Program makes happen every day for the youth and families in our community,” said The Place Interim Director Kecia Funaro-Burton. “The proceeds will help ensure that our youth have the opportunity to be a part of educational field trips throughout our area.”
The 10-inch fraser fir wreaths are available for $27 each. Order forms are available at The Place and on The Place’s Facebook page. Orders are due by Dec. 11. For additional information, email interim_director@theplacenorwich.com or call 336-9696, ext. 103.
In addition to the holiday wreathe fundraiser, The Place is offering Christmas ornament making workshops for all ages, led by local willow artist Bonnie Gale.
Participants will learn to craft imaginative Christmas decorations from willow leaves. These workshops – which are free to the public – are made possible by a $1,000 grant administered by the Chenango County Arts Council. Additional support comes from the Broad Street United Methodist Church in Norwich.
Ornaments made will be given to residents of the senior living facility at Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich in the third week of December.
Said Funaro-Burton, “Our willow ornament project, generously funded by a DEC grant through the Chenango Arts Council and the Broad Street United Methodist Church, is allowing the children in our KIDS and Teen programs, along with community members, to create beautifully handcrafted ornaments as gifts to those residents of the senior living facility at Chenango Memorial Hospital. This is a project that helps the youth of our community learn the importance of giving back, especially during the holidays.”
Upcoming workshops are scheduled throughout the remainder of November and into December. A K-3 children’s workshop will be held at The Place Nov. 30; a teens workshop will be at the Norwich Middle School Dec. 1; a grades 4-6 workshop at The Place Nov. 18 and Dec. 2; and an adult and family workshop Dec. 12 at The Artists’ Palette in Norwich.
Workshops are free but times vary. It is necessary to pre-register by calling Marjorie Grap at 336-9696, ext. 106. Registration for the adult and family workshop is highly recommended.
