Oxford boys dominate Schenevus 61-24

OXFORD - Hosting Schenevus on Wednesday, December 9, the Oxford boys’ varsity basketball team won 61-24.
Oxford put defensive pressure on Schenevus early in the game, leading in the first quarter by as much as 16 points at times. Josh Nelson got to an early start and scored eight of the Blackhawks’ 19 first quarter points. Nelson would finish second on his team for scoring with 12 points.
The second quarter went much like the first as Oxford’s lead increased. Now up 31-10 going into the half, it looked to be an early night for the visiting team.
The Blackhawk defense was what really made the difference in this game. “We pressed them early on,” said Oxford coach Tim Davis. “That allowed us to get some early baskets and a lead.”
The Blackhawks also finished with 26 steals over the course of the game.
Oxford’s Kevin Davis was the high scorer for the game, scoring 17. Davis hit two threes in the second quarter for a quick six points and then exploded in the fourth with 11 to help put away Schenevus. Oxford’s defense never let up double digit points in any quarter in their victory.
The Blackhawk boys will play again Saturday, December 12, when they host Elmira-Notre Dame.

Norwich

CHENANGO VALLEY - The Norwich girls’ varsity basketball team looked to extend their winning season when they traveled to Chenango Valley on Wednesday, December 9. The Purple Tornado accomplished their task, winning 45-32.
The game started out well for Norwich, as they outscored CV 18-8 in the first quarter. Norwich’s Makenzie Maynard and Meghan Komendarek both came out strong in the first, scoring the bulk of their team’s points. “We came out really well in the first,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “We moved the ball really well and got some easy baskets.”
The second quarter was much of the same for the Tornado, scoring 11 and only letting up seven. Norwich was now up 29-15 going into the half and looked to have no signs of stopping.
Norwich pushed their lead even further in the third quarter, leading by as much as 22 at one point. Going into the fourth quarter Norwich had a sizable lead of 42-21 on the home team.
In the final minutes Norwich began to relax on Chenango Valley who saw their opportunity for a come back and tried to take it. The only points the Purple Tornado would score in the fourth was a shot from behind the three point arc from Maynard. Maynard would finish with a team high 17 points. With Norwich’s offense a non-factor in the fourth, Chenango Valley looked to make a run but Norwich’s defense proved to be too much and stoped the Warriors short of a full comeback.
After an 11 point quarter, CV would give the game its final score of 45-32.
“I think that overall we played a pretty good game,” said Bennett. “Out team defense really stood out for us and we defended the ball really well. There are some things that we can work on in practice though to get ready for our tournament this weekend.”
Norwich plays again this Friday, December 11, when they host a weekend long tournament at Norwich High School.

Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton

MORRIS - Playing at Morris on Tuesday, December 8, the GMU girls’ varsity basketball team fell 31-18.
GMU traveled to Morris in a game which would be marred by Morris’ defensive pressure, causing turnovers. GMU was led by Kelsey Ross’ nine points over the course of the game, half of her team’s total score.
Morris began to pull away from GMU in the third quarter when they kept the visiting team to only a single point all quarter.
The GMU girls will play again Friday, December 11, when they host Milford.

Bowling

Sherburne-Earlville

SHERBURNE - The Sherburne-Earlville girls’ varsity bowling team is now 3-0 after their last match against Adirondack on Monday, December 7.
In their first match of the season they hosted Sauquoit on December 1 and defeated the visitors handily. S-E out bowled Sauquoit 1920 pins to 1321. S-E’s Jordyn Paul was the high roller for their first match with a 166 single game.
On December 3, the Marauder women traveled to Sauquoit for a rematch and won again. This time it wasn’t as easy as Sauquoit bowled a bit better and knocked down 1533 pins to S-E’s 1928. Paul was again the high roller for the match, bowling a 165.
On Monday, December 7, S-E hosted Adirondack and bowled their best of the season. The Marauders knocked down a total of 2183 pins to Adirondack’s 1380 for the win. S-E’s Liesa Armstrong bowled the high game for the night with a 209.
