Norwich boys edge out long time rival Oneonta

ONEONTA - Traveling to Oneonta, the Norwich boys’ varsity basketball team knocked off their long time rivals 62-57. Norwich would be down early but with the help of a big second quarter, came back to win it.
The first quarter did not start off in Norwich’s favor. The Purple Tornado went in to the opposing gym and fell a little flat in the opening minutes, only scoring eight points to Oneonta’s 17. Knowing that the rest of the game couldn’t continue like this, Norwich lit a fire underneath themselves and went out to dominate the second quarter. The Purple Tornado out scored Oneonta 24-10 in the second quarter to open up their lead that would eventually win them the game.
The final two quarters went back and forth between the two teams, trading baskets and matching point totals until the final whistle. It was Norwich’s big second quarter that would win them the game and keep their record perfect.
Norwich was led by senior leader Carlos Ithier who scored 26 points on the night, shooting 12-19 from the field.
The Norwich boys will play again Friday, December 18, when they play Jamesville-Dewitt.

OXFORD - Hosting Greene, Oxford’s girls’ varsity lost big 43-9.
Things just didn’t go Oxford’s way yesterday, December 16. The Blackhawk girls were kept under double didget points all game as Greene piled on the points. Oxford went up 2-0 to start the game, but that would be their only lead of the game. Greene went on to score nine in the first quarter and 10 in the second in what would eventually be the only points that they needed to win.
The second half was much of the same as Greene continued to score and kept Oxford away from the basket. The Blackhawks only scored three points all second half in their loss; while Greene earned 24 in the same half.

GILBERTSVILLE - The GMU girls’ varsity basketball team played their fourth game in six days yesterday, Wednesday, December 16. Hosting Sharron Springs, GMU won 31-19.
Both teams got off to a slow start but once GMU got going they didn’t stop. The score was all tied up after the first quarter as both teams had nine a piece. In the second quarter is where GMU would begin to build their lead, out scoring their opponent four to two.
GMU was lead by Jocelyn Duncan who earned 15 points over the course of the game. Duncan and her team mate Kelsey Ross, who scored 14, combined for 29 points last night.
To start off the third quarter things got a little hairy for GMU. Sharron Springs began to close the gap and GMU was up by only one point to start the fourth. “We finally had a good fourth quarter,” said GMU coach Jim Johnson. “We went out and scored 11 and kept them away from the basket. This being our fourth game in six days, I’m really happy to see the girls go out and do well late in the game.”

CLINTON - On Tuesday, December 15, the S-E boys’ varsity basketball team traveled to Clinton to play in a league match up. S-E would win in a tough game 66-59.
The game started a little rocky for the Marauder boys, only scoring eight points in the first quarter to Clinton’s 19. The second quarter signaled a momentum shift for S-E. Although they matched Clinton’s point total at 13, they began what would be their eventual come back.
Scoring 27 and only holding Clinton to four in the third quarter, S-E took on a lead that they would not lose. The Marauders rallied behind three players that all had big nights. Sam Tuttle, Gavin Giroux, and Dylan Seymour all put up big numbers on their way to a win. Tuttle earned 19, Giroux scored 18, and Seymour sank five shots from the field, including three from beyond the arc, for 14 on the night.
To end the game S-E scored 18 in the fourth to give the game its final score of 66-59.

SIDNEY - Traveling to Sidney, the Oxford girls and boys bowling teams split victories. The boys would lose 4-0 while the girls would win 5-0.
For the boys it was Phil Smith who bowled the high match. Smith bowled a high single match of 188 and a combined three of 532. Oxford’s Corey Turner, Heath Hadlock, and Gavin Wheatley all bowled over 300 totals for the day.
Oxford’s ladies cruised to another victory on Wednesday, shutting out Sidney. Oxford was lead by 7th grader Erin Howard who bowled a season high 206 and a 591 series. Her series was the highest series bowled for an Oxford girl since 1970.

NORWICH - The Norwich boys’ varsity bowling team routed Chenango Forks on Wednesday, December 16. Norwich shut out Chenango Forks 5-0 and out bowled them 2746 to 2229.
Bowling the high match for Norwich was Dustin Gladstone. Gladstone bowled a 247 high match and a 642 total. Also earning honor matches for Norwich were Corey Huggins with a 202, Nick Deady with a 219, and Dustin Rifanburg who knocked down 231 pins.
The Norwich girls did not fare as well as the boys, losing 5-0 to Forks. The Tornado women were out bowled 2391 to 2008.
Norwich’s LeahAnne Humphry earned the honor match for Norwich, bowling a 229 high game and a 560 total.
Norwich bowls again Friday, December 18 when they take on Susquehanna Valley.
