Chenango-opoly to hit shelves soon
NORWICH - A long anticipated board game with local ties is soon to hit local store shelves after a small group of area volunteers spent more than a year and a half creating, designing and dreaming it up to benefit community members of greater Chenango.
The localized version inspired by the ever popular Parker Brothers classic “Monopoly,” Chenango-opoly is a game board that allows players to negotiate their way around Chenango County while buying and selling pieces of various real estate.
Chenango-opoly was a brainchild of John Antonowicz, a Norwich local who pitched the idea to members of the Chenango United Way board as a way generate funding while creating a piece of history for the Chenango community. The game was sponsored by the Chenango United Way. All revenue from gross sales will go to the nonprofits 2016 annual campaign.
“This game will provide a great way for families to see all Chenango County has to offer, and yet still offer assistance and raise funds for our community," said Antonowicz, who serves on a number of Chenango County nonprofit boards including the CUW.
But beyond the game's fundraising intent, playing around the board can bring the unwitting up to speed with regard to what makes Chenango County a unique and desirable destination.
The pewter game pieces are based off of local icons: the court house, a cow, a bull thistle, a classic car, a canoe, and even the United Way logo – all of which were designed by Sarah Mahan, and Cover design and art work for the board designed by area graphic artist Anne Drexler.
The execution of the collaborative effort led by Antonowicz all but galvanizes the spirit of local businesses, individuals and organizations that come together in an effort to make a positive lasting change and support one another.
As one can imagine, going door-to-door for contributions and sponsorship for a far fledged board game was no easy sell; but not to be deterred, Anotnowicz persevered and was pleasantly surprised when his hard work paid off.
“Local businesses sponsored various the money pieces, the board spaces, the money holder, the board box top and bottom,” said Antonowicz.
Games will be available for $34.99 starting in January. Many local businesses are depicted on the board, along with signs from each town.
Antonowicz said that Cheanango-opoly will be sold at a number of local businesses and at the United Way Office, and can be pre-ordered by calling the CUW at 334-8815.
