Guernsey Park becomes ‘dog-friendly’

NORWICH – For dog lovers, it’s welcome news that Guernsey Memorial Library Park in Norwich has been made the city’s first “dog-friendly” park.
In an attempt to accommodate dog owners while also maintaining a safe and healthy place for kids to play, the Guernsey Memorial Library recently incorporated a dog waste station in its park on West Main, making it the first public park in Norwich to have a moderate solution to an unsanitary issue.
“We have people walking their dogs here all the time, but we also have a lot of children who come and play here,” said Library Director Connie Dalrymple. “We were seeing an increasing problem. We wanted to be friendly to both by making as healthy as possible; so we decided to do that by making it easy for people to pick up after their pets.”
Dalrymple added her surprise to learn that Guernsey Park was the only park in Norwich to accommodate pet owners and their four-legged friends.
“It’s a good effort. If this is going to be a good place for children, we really don’t want to have the problem we had,” she said.
The Guernsey Memorial Library Park property is owned by the Norwich City School District, but grounds and playground maintenance are funded through the library’s annual budget.
