New ‘Baby Nook’ supports breastfeeding, hosts open house Thursday

NORWICH – The Chenango County Department of Health (CCDOH) has recently taken steps to ensure that mothers can more effectively care for their infant children. The department specifically focused nursing mothers and babies, offering new breastfeeding support initiatives to all nursing mothers in Chenango County.
Beginning in January, the CCDOH officially opened the area's first “The Baby Nook Lactation Room and Weigh Station,” sponsored by the nursing division of CCDOH.
This “lactation lounge” offers families a resource to help mothers with their breastfeeding goals. It is a place to pump and store breast milk, or receive lactation counseling support from a Certified Lactation Counselor. The room is even outfitted with an infant scale so mothers can accurately track their infants growth, all while having the opportunity to meet and network with other nursing mothers, and learn more about infant feeding.
“The Baby Nook offers a great resource for both mothers and their infants,” said Mary Brady, LPN, CLC. “The goal is to offer comfort and assistance without pressure.” Brady disclosed that her own struggle with breastfeeding as a first-time mother fueled a desire to help others, paving the way for her to further her education by becoming a Lactation Counselor. “Had a facility like the Baby Nook been available to me, I might have had better success at breastfeeding; and that’s why believe in the program’s mission,” said Brady.
Organizers say that The Baby Nook will be open by appointment for the public through Public Health Nursing, and an open house will be held for the public on Jan. 28 beginning at 3 p.m.
The Baby Nook is a project developed and supported by the newly formed professional coalition called Breastfeeding Partners of Chenango County.
“The mission of this group is to improve the health of our community by working in partnership to encourage, promote, and support breastfeeding in Chenango County,” read a press release.
Some of the group’s partners are from UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, UHS Chenango Memorial Women’s Health Center, Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network, Family Planning, Headstart and the OFC's WIC Program. “We plan to begin using the Baby Nook and scheduling appointments by referral on February 1,” said Christina Arnold, a Health Educator at CCDOH.
The Baby Nook located in room 205 (second floor) of the County Office Building, 5 Court Street in Norwich.
“Women should be encouraged to discuss their breastfeeding goals and desires to breastfeed with family, friends, doctors, employers, and child care providers,” said Arnold. “When a woman decides to breastfeed, talking with her doctor about her plans before the baby is born is the key to her future breastfeeding success. The doctor and birth center can work with the mother to provide her with the help and assistance she needs to help her be successful. It is also critical that the mother have the support of her partner and family members so that mom can reach her breastfeeding goals.”
“We hope the new Baby Nook will be a benefit to our community. We encourage mothers who are having trouble with nursing to call Public Health or talk to their medical provider about a referral to the Baby Nook,” said Arnold. “Through support and encouragement we can help breastfeeding mothers nurse longer and achieve their personal goals,” Arnold added.
