Chenango Lake Perch Derby postponed
NORWICH – Warm weather has stopped the ice from thickening on Chenango Lake; and with only mild-weather forecasted, the Perch Derby will be postponed to Feb. 20, 2016.
NBT Bank is sponsoring a $1,000 prize for the first perch caught with a 2016 tag. As in the past, if no tagged perch is caught, the $1,000 will be raffled off to registered anglers only.
Chobani is sponsoring the second $500 prize for the lucky angler catching a second perch with a 2016 tag.
It should be noted that there’s also a $150 cash prize, donated by the family of Richard Polgar, D.M.D. in his memory, for the Largest Pickerel of the day and a $150 cash prize, donated by Blueox Corporation, for the largest perch of the day.
Registration begins at 6 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. The $5 registration fee and all other proceeds from the derby will be used to fund the many community projects that the Oxford Lions Club supports, such as eye examinations and eyeglasses for those in need.
“Unfortunately we had to postpone the event for everyone’s safety. However, the ice is still thick and on track to be able to hold the annual event on February 20,” said Oxford Lions Club's Jared Bartle. “We have had a number of people pre-register for the event already. In the event we have to cancel the derby, the $1,000 prize sponsored by NBT Bank will still be raffled off to all pre-registered anglers.”
Registration forms can be picked up at Mayhood’s in Norwich or the Oxford Lions website. Prizes will be given away for the largest perch caught every 15 minutes of the Derby as well.
A menu of hot food and drinks will be available all day on the ice. Look for more information at the Oxford Lions website at: www.oxfordlions.org.
