NORWICH - The Norwich girls varsity basketball team honored their three seniors on Friday night during a 57-40 win over the Chenango Valley Warriors. Norwich Seniors Shelby Benjamin, Bridget Murphy, and Kassidy Seary all scored in their final regular season game at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
The Tornado fell behind 11-10 after one quarter, but would take the lead once and for all after a strong second.
“We struggled a bit on both ends in the first quarter. Meghan [Komendarek] got into a lot of foul trouble early,” said Norwich Head Coach Josh Bennett, “but we still did a very good job of managing the time, tempo, and pace of the game.”
Norwich’s Mackenzie Maynard scored a game-high 16 points, and Kate Dowdall added on another 10 for the Tornado.
Coach Bennett went on to say, “It’s a big win for us because of the momentum. At this point in the season, we have won our division, and this win as well as the game against Oneonta on Thursday can help solidify our seed for sectionals.”
The Norwich girls move to 12-5 overall on the season. They hope to clinch the third seed going into sectional play with a win at the Oneonta Yellowjackets this Thursday night. Tip-off is at 7:45 p.m.
