Marauders edge Raiders in a close one

CANASTOTA– The Sherburne-Earlville boys varsity basketball team was on the road last night, Feb. 8, in hopes of upsetting the Canastota raiders at home, which they did in last quarter heroics, winning 53-48.
“It was a great high school basketball game. Both teams played very aggressive and physical,” said S-E head coach Kevin Vibbard.
S-E would take the early lead after one quarter of play at 14-11, and would continue this tightly contested match up into the second where The Marauders would hold a very slight lead at the half only up 2-points 22-20.
The Raiders would correct the ship somewhat in the third quarter due to the play of number 23, Jacob Purdy who scored 7-points in the quarter. Canastota would tie S-E in scoring for the quarter each at 14 a piece.
However, despite the efforts of The Raiders, this third quarter attempt was outshined in the fourth quarter, in part to the stellar shooting from foul line of S-E’s Matt Hall who went 5-6 in the fourth quarter alone.
“Lead changed hands in the fourth quarter around five different times,” said Vibbard.
The Marauder’s Ian Fleming would also assist his team by scoring 6-points, including a 3-point shot, as S-E raced to score an impressive 17-points in the final quarter.
“We took the lead with about one and a half minutes left then made fouls,” said Vibbard.
The Marauders would outlast the late game surge from the Raiders to hold on to a 53-48 win, S-E now sits at a 14-5 overall record as well as 7-1 in the division.
S-E will face off against Cazanovia tomorrow night in away in Cazenovia as they now await the sectional seeding, which will be done Wednesday morning.
