NORWICH–Shortly after 10 a.m. Monday, City of Norwich Fire Department and other mutual aid partners responded to a smoke investigation at a S. Broad Street business.

Firefighters arrived quickly and found no open flames, but an obvious smell of burning was present along S. Broad Street in front of several area businesses.

While inspecting the scene, firefighters pinpointed the source and began cutting the sidewalk in front of McNeil Jewelers to gain access to an unused ground hatch where it’s believed the smoke originated.
