GREENE – The Greene varsity boys basketball team continues to make history in the 2015-2016 season, as they won this past Friday Feb. 19, and will now advance to the semi-finals of the Section IV class C sectional playoffs.
This advancement to the semi-finals is a feat much like winning the MAC championship earlier this year, no other basketball team from Greene has accomplished either since these kids have even been alive.
The Trojans would play a dominate fourth quarter, which due to all the fouls being called seemed to last a very suspenseful lifetime.
“They made it exciting, the boys showed they can handle adversity, they can be down and still keep with the game,” said Greene head coach Chris Rice.
The game was in a back and forth motion for much of the fourth quarter with Greene usually slightly up by one or two points.
“We’ve been down or up by 2-points at least half of our games this year. So we know we can play in the second half,” said Rice.
The first quarter saw the Trojans trail Watkins Glen by a mere one-point; while by the conclusion of the first half, Greene would lead 22-20.
“It was pretty impressive win and I am really impressed with Watkins Glen only playing five guys, they fought us hard. I was throwing other guys at them. And my big guys came up big on the offensive blast, they came up with two or three rebounds at a time and that really helped us out,” said Rice.
Greene would be led on the night in scoring by Luke Erickson, number 21, who netted 11-points; followed by Luke Day, number 11 who added another 9-points.
Watkins Glen would only have five athletes score on the night but would still keep pace due to number 10, Jacob Carocci, who had a game high 19-points.
“Number 10 played lights out tonight, he's a kid we weren’t watching as much either, he had one heck of game,” said Rice.
With this win last Friday night, Greene will now face off against Moravia as they travel to Moravia Tuesday evening on Feb. 23.
Greene suffered an opening day loss to Moravia at 64-59 and will now have a chance at redemption in the sectional playoff race.
“We're playing Moravia, we played them the first game of the season and this is who we wanted to have a chance at again. We definitely werent ready for them and we didnt play well,” said Rice. “We are playing in some ways probebly the best basketball, especially defensively. I think our defense is ready to try to play these guys, we know theyre good and we know they have a heck of a point guard and theyre going to be gameplanning for us as well. We just have to play the best game we can play, if we do that we can pull it off.”
