Vandalism spree strikes Sherburne residents
SHERBURNE – Two youths have been arrested in relation to a recent crime spree in the Village of Sherburne and surrounding areas.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, with the assistance of the Village of Sherburne Police Department, currently are investigating several reported incidents of criminal mischief and larceny in and around the Sherburne area.
The incidents being investigated allegedly occurred late on March 8, and continued into the morning of Wednesday, March 9.
The investigation carried out by law enforcement agencies began with a report of a motor vehicle crash on County Road 14 in the Town of Smyrna, when the CCSO was alerted around 4:30 a.m., March 9.
Upon arrival, deputies reported that the occupants were nowhere to be found near the vehicle and had left the scene of the crash.
Upon investigation, deputies determined that the vehicle was stolen from a residence on Classic Street in the Village of Sherburne.
During the investigation, deputies narrowed the suspects down to two individuals: 17-year old Michael Wilson, of East State Street in Sherburne, and a 15-year old male youth, also from Sherburne.
It is alleged that both Wilson and the 15-year old youth stole the vehicle before crashing it, and spray painted numerous other vehicles, buildings, and residences in Sherburne.
According to authorities, it was discovered that the two defendants caused damage to these vehicles in Sherburne while also stealing various items from the vehicles.
Both Wilson and the 15-year old were arrested and charged with multiple counts of the following: grand larceny in the fourth degree, a class E felony; petty larceny, a class A misdemeanor; and criminal mischief in the second, third, and fourth degree.
Property damage and stolen items are estimated to be approximately $15,000.
According to authorities, the 15-year old was released on a juvenile appearance ticket and will appear in Chenango County Family Court at a later date.
While 17-years old, Wilson was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility and is being held on $20,000 cash bail. He will reappear in court at a later date.
