American Legion Girls State Delegates honored at Chenango County meeting
SHERBURNE – Each year a few units of the Chenango County American Legion Auxiliary (CC ALA) select High School juniors to attend the Empire Girls State leadership program at SUNY Brockport. Last year’s Girls State ambassadors and this year’s incoming “citizens” were special guests of honor at the CC ALA meeting March 8, held at Sherburne American Legion Post 876.
Samantha Mack, Chelsea Law, Meghan Lippa and Kierra Fairbanks were invited to a special joint dinner and meeting of the Legionnaires and the Auxiliary of Chenango County. Also joining them were 2016 incoming Girls State delegates, Sierra Gold and Shay Franklin of Sherburne, and Lacey Hathaway of Oxford; Abigail Oglesby, sponsored by New Berlin Unit 348, was unable to attend.
The 2015 high school junior students were selected by their sponsoring local ALAs. Chelsea Law was chosen by Unit 1478 of McDonough, Meghan Lippa by Unit 189 of Norwich, Samantha Mack by Unit 376 of Oxford, and Kierra Fairbanks of Unit 876 of Sherburne.
Last summer, the 2015 quartet joined over three hundred girls from across New York State, with similar high credentials. They were all there for a hands-on, week-long educational workshop that focuses on Americanism and the political process. It is not unusual for the experience that girls take away from Girls State to be life changing. The high impact experience left the citizens, as they are called at Girls State, with patriotic ideals, improved leadership skills, and many new friends.
