Weekend fire in downtown Norwich

NORWICH – On Sunday March 20, shortly after 2 a.m., the Norwich Fire Department responded to a call for a fire at Howard Johnson’s Hotel on North Broad Street in the city of Norwich.
According to the Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, the fire originated in room 213 of the hotel when one of the heating units had allegedly shorted out and in turn caused a small electrical fire in said unit.
Chawgo explained that the building was evacuated and that members of staff at the hotel had responded and used a fire extinguisher prior to the Fire Department arriving on scene.
“The main issue was smoke and fire extinguisher dust throughout the second floor, so that took a while. It was minimal damage, with the only damage coming to the actual heating unit,” said Chawgo. “They [the staff] did the right thing, and we [Norwich Fire Department] had a fast response. It was a minor incident compared to what it first sounded like.”
It should be noted that no one was injured during this incident.
