Authorities: Man ‘immediately attacked’ deputy, held on $50k bail
NEW BERLIN – A man sits in the local jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail following an incident that authorities say took place ten days ago.
Jason C. Douglas, 44, New Berlin, faces charges of assault in the second degree, a class D felony; resisting arrest, a class A misdemeanor; and menacing in the second degree, a class A misdemeanor.
According to authorities with the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, on March 18 at approximately 10:15 a.m., the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call for a domestic dispute on Warner Hill Road in the Town of New Berlin.
Authorities said the first arriving officer, Deputy Anthony Lawrence was met at the front door of the residence by the suspect, Douglas.
It was reported by the CCSO that Douglas “immediately attacked Deputy Lawrence who then attempted to take Douglas into custody. The defendant continued to resist arrest and then caused injury to Deputy Lawrence.”
Per a release from the Sheriff’s Office, Douglas was said to have picked up a tire iron and ran into a garage.
Police said that upon arrival of back up officers, entry was made into the garage where a taser was deployed, but not effective.
The defendant then was said to have dropped the tire iron and officers were then able to take him into custody.
Both the Douglas and Lawrence were transported to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.
Douglas was arraigned before Chenango County Court Judge Frank Revoir Jr. He was remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 property bond.
Douglas is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
