‘Night of the Living Dead’ screenwriter to visit Smithville bookstore

SMITHVILLE – A big name in horror fiction will be in Smithville Flats this weekend for a single-day event meant to pique interest in reading, local arts and a local business.
The Book Peddler, a used bookstore in Smithville carrying thousands of titles in fiction and non-fiction – as well as an array of antiques and collectibles – will host an event this Sunday featuring famed horror writer John Russo, whose 1968 film “Night of the Living Dead” spawned generations of zombie-themed books, movies and television.
Russo’s also credited with the creation of several other horror flicks in his longstanding career as a screenwriter, director and producer, including “The Majorettes,” “Midnight,” and “Santa Claws.”
Phil Montelione, owner of The Book Peddler, said the event aims to ignite interest in local talent and at the same time, give his business a little more exposure.
“Word’s getting around. We’re expecting a large showing,” said Montelione. “I think it’s going to be a great event for the community. And for horror afficionados, this will be the place to be.”
Russo will be among dozens of local artists and vendors marketing their items at The Book Peddler during the event. Works of award-winning metal sculpturist Jeff Man will also be on display, artists Cole Johnson and Jon Bon Fed will be soliciting their works, and military memorabilia will be shown by local enthusiast Paul Buckley.
Publisher Gary Vincent and author Solon Tsangaras will also be promoting the upcoming movie, “My Uncle John Is A Zombie!”
“We plan on having 12-14 vendors here. Some of them are artists and some are antique vendors selling a variety of things,” Montelione said. “Most of the vendors are local vendors, but they’re the best around.”
Food and music will also be included throughout the event which is set to take place starting at 10 a.m. Sunday.
Montelione first opened the doors of The Book Peddler in May, 2015. Since then, the small business on State Highway 41 in Smithville Flats has, like any business, seen its ups and downs, he said. But events like the one coming up Sunday present new opportunities.
“The ups have been high and the lows are low, but I think that the word is spreading. I’ve seen new and repeat customers come in and they’ve enjoyed the store. Everything in the store book-wise is being upgraded and I’m getting better material, but it's been a long process,” said Montelione.
Montelione said he hopes to start selling books at farmers markets and flea markets in the area starting this summer.
