Tornado boys and girls Track and Field down the visiting Warriors
NORWICH – The Norwich Tornado Track and Field boys and girls teams both walked away with wins over the visiting Chenango Valley Warriors when they came to town on Tuesday, April 19.
The boys would earn the team win over Chenango Valley 106-35, as they would subsequently win 14 of the potential 17 events, with many second and third place finishes as well.
“It turned out really well, it was a good day for us overall,” said Norwich head coach Shaun Horan.
Sophomore for Norwich Zach Race took advantage of the warm weather when he earned individual wins in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The 200 meter dash saw Race earn the win with a time of 23.4 seconds, however, it was the 100 meter dash that really highlighted Race's speed on the track when he bolted to a 10.9 second win.
This 10.9 second 100 meter dash is a mere .1 second off of the Norwich school record that was set in 1992 by Jason Morris who ran a 10.8.
The 4x100 meter relay of Zach Race, David Berger, Connor Nial, and Eric Conant, won over the CV team with a time of 47.4.
Norwich swept the relays, as the 4x400 team of Connor Nial, Connor Supensky, Gabe Gawronski, and Noah Bufalini earned the win with a time of 4:05; while the 4x800 meter relay of Ben Ericksen, Gabe Gawronski, Noah Bufalini, and Chris Brown ran a 10:37 to seal the sweep in the relays for the boys.
“We subbed someone out in the 4x400 relay with like five minutes right before the race, and put Connor Nial in, he didn’t even blink and was just like 'yeah okay,' he got in their and ran his heart out,” explained Horan.
Gawronski picked up an individual win on the track in the 400 meter dash with a time of :57 seconds; with Bufalini also picking up a win in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:14.6.
Ben Ericksen left the meet with three wins under his belt after claimed wins for the Tornado in the 1600 meter run at 4:42 and the 3200 meter run with a time of 11:08.
Connor Nial closed out the running events for Norwich with a win in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:08.4.
Chenango Valley's Alex Irving claimed three wins in the meet as he won the 110 hurdles at a time of 19.2, while also showing off his jumping in the Triple Jump and High Jump with a 38'7” ¾, and a height of 5'8”, respectively.
The remainder of the field events fell to the Tornado, as David Bernstein once again dominated the Shot Put with a throw of 46'9”, and David Bernstein launching his winning Discus throw a length of 139'.
“The throwers did a great job,” said Horan. “Bernstein is zinging them out and not even doing full spins yet.”
David Berger managed a height of 9'6” in the Pole Vault for the win while senior Jordan Vinal scratched out a win in the Long Jump at a jump of 18'7.5”.
“We had a big advantage with them without their number one sprinter, but we had some great performances with Zach Race and all the guys who managed a second and third. We has a lot of personal records today on a windy day,” said Horan. “The boys team now, with a few easy wins, they’re finding their spots and getting in their groove. The kids are just working hard and doing a great job.”
The Tornado girls won big on the evening much like the boys as they defeated CV as a team with a score of 102-39. The girls would end up winning 16 of the 17 events during the meet.
“I think this built a little confidence for the girls, so that was great,” said Horan.
The 100 meter dash saw Marysa Campbell run a 13.8 to claim the win, on her birthday nevertheless. Campbell secured a second place in the Long Jump as well.
Campbell tacked on a third win in the 4x100 meter relay with her team including Hailey Colabelli, Delilah Geislinger, and Destiny Gladney as they ran a flat :55.
Geislinger cracked the :30 second mark in the 200 meter dash when she ran a 29.9 second run for the win at the event.
The girls swept the relays as well over CV when the 4x400 meter relay team of Liz Eddy, Hailey Colabelli, Delilah Geislinger, and Nicole Mikalunas ran a 5:18 for the win, followed by Liz Eddy, Nicole Jeffrey, Trinity Myers, and Kylie Marvin running a 12:06 in the 4x800 relay.
“Nicole (Jeffrey) for freshman and to come out, she was a little shocked I think when I told her, but to run the the 4x800, 800, and 1500, all within about an hour. She won all three, that is progress something to be proud of,” said Horan.
The 400 meter dash went to Hailey Colabelli with a time of :68 seconds, while Jeffrey recorded her 800 meter time in 2:43, with her 1500 meter run being at 5:47.
The lone win for Chenango Valley on the evening went to Julie Worden in the 3000 meter run when she ran a nice 14:59.
The Norwich girls locked up with meet when they swept the field events seeing Long Jump go to Emily Shattuck who jumped 16'2”; and Triple Jump go once again to Vanessa Salerno at 31'7”.
Savannah Williams cleared the height of 4'8” in the High Jump to tack on a win for the Tornado, while Liz Eddy impressed with a 7' Pole Vault height.
Throwers Katelyn Shaver and Kara Evans cleaned up their competition when Shaver took first in the Shot Put with a throw of 30' 7 and half inches and Evans claimed the win at Discus with a length of 96'.
“The girls really are a small team, so I think they know that, but they do come together with a lot of girls stepping up left and right. They know what they need to do to help the team,” explained Horan. “We are getting some nice improvement, and the girls are doing great.”
Next up for Norwich Track and Field is a week break from duel meets as they head into their spring break. Norwich will head this Saturday, April 23 to the Sidney Invitational.
The next duel meet will see Norwich take on rival Oneonta, on May 3rd.
“They’re gonna be tough definitely our toughest so far on the year,” said Horan of facing the Oneonta team.
