Blackhawk baseball earns win over Delhi late

DELHI – The Oxford varsity baseball now sits at a nice 5-2 record after knocking off Delhi 4-2 last Tuesday April 19, when they traveled to Delhi.
Jon Heggie rained supreme in the game at the bat as he finished the night going 3-4 with an RBI.
“Jon(Heggie) hit the ball really well, obviously going 3-4 with an RBI in the seventh for an insurance run,” explained Oxford head coach Chris Palmer.
Despite Heggie's great at bats it was the defense and pitching on the evening that really kept Oxford in the game, which ultimately allowed the late win.
“We had no errors in the field. Dylan (Depew) had eight strikeouts and no walks, he did everything we would ask from him, and he worked himself out of a few jams in the middle. He did a really nice job then Austin (Crawford) came in and closed it out for us,” said Palmer.
It was Dylan Depew on the mound for the Blackhawks, much like Palmer attested Depew fended off Delhi throughout the game, blanking their batters in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings.
It was Oxford's Nick Neer who helped them jump out to the early 2-0 lead in the second when he knocked a triple in to send two men home.
“He (Neer) has been struggling a bit so it was nice to see him hit well and get the early runs so when they did score it was only a tied game,” said Palmer.
Delhi would tie the game up in the fifth inning after scoring one run in the fourth and another tacked on in the fifth.
“When they scored to tie in the fifth, we were able to come back and answer which was nice to see,” said Palmer. “Kevin hit a long shot for a home run.”
It was Kevin Davis who played hero at the bat, to go along with Heggie's nice outing, when he knocked a home run in to earn Oxford the lead for good in the sixth inning.
Corey Marshman secured the glove to catch the final batter for Delhi in the seventh after seeing Heggie hit a double to send pitcher, Depew, home to make the final score 4-2 in favor of Oxford.
“It was a great job pitching and just error free baseball that got the job done,” said Palmer.
Oxford will face off against Unadilla Valley later today at 4:30 p.m.
“We cant over look anyone,” Palmer stressed.
