Oxford softball and baseball recap
Oxford softball suffers through two tough losses after long week
OXFORD – The Oxford varsity softball team now sits at 3-7, after the latest two games they have played on Wednesday and Thursday or this week.
“Today we just showed how tired we were, we have been going, and going, and going and just haven’t had any practice time,” said Oxford head coach Heather Pizza.
Oxford currently is on 10 game, everyday streak where the only day off has come this past Sunday.
Despite the long stretch of games, and picking up three wins during that time, Oxford went into Wednesday's game against Unadilla Valley with high hopes.
Unadilla Valley would earn the win in seven innings at a score of 11-6, on the back of some elite pitching from Tia Peck who through nine strikeouts.
Peck limited the Oxford batters to eight hits as Kylie Roys would post a game going 2-4 with two runs, Lauren Cobb would go 1-4 with two RBI's and two runs.
After jumping out to a quick 2-1 lead in the first inning, Oxford seemed to be playing from behind the remainder of the game. UV would tie the game at 2-2 in the second inning and then tack on three more in the third.
The lady Blackhawks tried to manage a close game when they added two runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh. However, UV posting a fifth inning with another run and then exploded for a five run inning in the sixth to claim the win.
The very next day Oxford softball travelled to Unatego, only to fully feel the exhaustion from the 10-day stretch.
“We didn’t give up, three runs at the end of the game, and we had girls on bases most of the game,” said Pizza. “There were no blow out innings, they (Unatego) just kept going they strung out their hits throughout the game.”
Unatego would jump out to a 11-0 lead through the first five innings of the game before Oxford managed a run of their own in the sixth. Oxford would also tack on an additional two runs in the seventh as the fight continued throughout for the ladies.
Allison Beckwith went 2-3 with two RBI's while also standing on the mound for the majority of both games.
