Seven records broke by Chenango County athletes at the Doug Quinney Invitational
SIDNEY – This past Saturday, April 23, six Chenango County varsity track and field teams traveled to Sidney to compete in the annual Doug Quinney invitational.
This year on the boys side it was Dryden who claimed the top spot as the team winners with 99-points. Norwich ended in fourth place with 48-points, followed by Bainbridge-Guilford in eleventh place with 17-points, Greene in fourteenth place with 12-points. Unadilla Valley, Oxford and Harpursville-Afton all finished the meet with 0-points.
The girls saw the team win go to Newark Valley with 88-points. Norwich claimed the seventh place finish with 28-points, followed Unadilla Valley in tenth with 22.33-points, Harpursville-Afton in sixteenth place with 12-points, Bainbridge-Guilford in seventeenth place with 9-points, and Greene in nineteenth place with 4-points. Oxford finished with 0-points on the day.
Norwich
The Norwich boys track and field team walked away with many personal bests as well as the accomplishment of setting two meet records.
It was Ben Ericksen who won the Steeplechase and set the new meet record in the event to start the Tornado off strong when he ran a 10:14.42.
In the 800 meter run, Norwich's Gabe Gawronski ran a 2:04.96 and took home a second place finish to Patrick Hazlitt of Watkins Glen who ran a 2:01.48. Gawronski's teammate Noah Bufalini ranked in the top six as well when he ran a 2:09.13, to place him fourth overall in the event.
Norwich's Eric Conant managed a jump of 18'09" in the Long Jump as he claimed a fourth place finish in the event, and successfully was the only local male long jumper to place in any jumping event for the meet.
The Norwich throwers dominated the throwing pits when they walked off the bus this past Saturday. Thomas Reilly knocked off a meet record when he threw a 48'05.75" in the Shot Put to earn the first place finish. However, it wasn’t just Reilly who place in the Shot Put for the Tornado,
David Bernstein knocked out a sixth place finish with his throw of 42'05.50".
The Discus wasn’t much different, Reilly walked away in third place on the night when he came up short to Unatego's Jacob. Morrison who threw a 146'00.50"
to get the first place win, compared to Reilly's throw of 140'01.50".
Bernstein once again placed in the event, this time earning a fourth place finish with his throw of 125'10.00", followed by Norwich's Trevor McCarthy in sixth place with a throw of 116'01".
The Tornado ladies saw Nicole Jeffrey battle into a sixth place finish in the 1500 meter run, when she ran a time of 5:27.47.
Also placing sixth for Norwich was Hailey Colabelli when she ran a 1:05.47 in the 400 meter dash to Lindsey Castle of Bainbridge-Guilford by tenths of a second when Castle ran a 1:05.03.
Emily. Shattuck took to the Long Jump pit to showcase her abilities when she placed third with a jump of 16'07.75", a jump that managed to be only a half inch out of second place as her opponent from Sidney jumped a 16'08.25".
However, the throwing pit once again saw Norwich dominate when Katelyn Shaver took home a first place finish in the Shot Put, while also setting a new meet record in the event when she threw her top throw at a distance of 34'07.50", beating the next closest girl by over a foot.
Shaver also managed a second place finish in the Discus when she threw 104'08.50".
Bainbridge-Guilford
The boys from B-G saw Cody. Ferrara get things started when he finished fifth in the Steeplechase with a time of 11:42.11.
Dan Norris impressed everyone when he managed a second place finish in the 100 meter dash, showcasing his speed with a time of 11.66.
Despite not earning the top spot in the Pole Vault, the B-G boys dominated the event in placing, as Aidan Nolan cleared a height of 10'00.01"
placing third, followed by his teammate Brandon Scherhaufer who finished tied for fifth when he and two others cleared the height of 9'06.01".
The girls saw some similar success when they managed to see three of their athletes place in the top six as well.
It was Lindsey Castle who edged Colabelli of Norwich to get the fifth place spot with a time of 1:05.03 in the 400 meter dash. Castle also followed suit when she took to the Pole Vault pit and placed fourth in a tie with a girl from Lansing, both clearing the height of 8'06.01".
Abi Selfridge battled with Norwich's Shattuck, but ultimately was edged and placed fourth with her jump of 16'00.50" in the Long Jump.
Greene
The Trojans had two athletes on the boys side place in the top six, as Greg Wynter ran a 1:08.48 in the 400 meter hurdles to take the last placing spot at sixth.
It was Chris Klecha who won the Pole Vault when he cleared an impressive height of 11'00.01", this also earned Klecha a place in the record books as he has now set a new meet record in the event.
The lady Trojans saw Mary Klecha follow suit for the girls as she earned a fifth place finish in the 400 meter hurdles for the girls side when she ran a 1:16.36.
Teammate Chloe Parks ran her way into a fifth place spot as well in the 800 meter run when she posted a time of 2:41.83.
Unadilla Valley
The boys from UV failed to manage a top place winner in the individual, despite this fact the girls side more than made up for this when they saw two meet records fall due to the outstanding performance of Julia Oglesby.
Oglesby finished with first place time of 1:02.19, in the 400 meter dash. This time also landed her in the record books, as she toppled her first record on the day.
Oglesby later took to the High Jump mat where she also set a meet record when she won the event, clearing a height of 5'02”.
Teammate and fellow High Jumper Hannah. Lazarus, also managed a top six finish in the High Jump when she entered into a three way tie at the height of 4'06", placing fourth.
Harpursville-Afton
The boys from AH also failed to swing anyone into a top six spot, however, the girls managed two place finishers, with one claiming a record.
Senior from AH, Daphne Knapp, ran and won the Steeplechase in a blazing fast time of 8:12.74, earning the win in the event.
AH also saw their 4x800 meter relay place in top sixth, claiming the fifth place spot. The relay consisted of Shyahna Gaydorus, Calixta Terrell, Stacia Wilson, and Sarah Peterson, who managed a solid time of 11:56.65.
Oxford
Oxford Track and Field on both the girls and boys side did not place an athlete in the top six for an event.
