Solid pitching and defense carries the Tornado past the Saints

NORWICH – After a four day hiatus from any games, the Norwich varsity softball team hosted the Saints of Seton Catholic, yesterday April 25, in what proved to be a much closer game than the last time around this season.
Norwich would earn the win at 4-0 after jumping out to an early lead in the game and relying on solid pitching to carry them to the win.
This 4-0 margin was much improved for the Saints who hosted Norwich earlier this season only to lose in blowout fashion 27-0.
“This was not anything like I expected. But I told the girls after Chenango Forks, I would rather lose 4-1, or win 4-0 like tonight, than win 27-0 because you don’t learn anything when you win like that,” said Norwich head coach Scott Moore.
The early lead in the game did go to Norwich in the second inning of play when Kassidy Seary reached second base on an error from the Saints. Seary didn’t have to wait long before her teammate, and Pitcher Hannah Eddy knocked her home with an RBI triple.
With Eddy now on third and Seary home safe, it was Kate Dowdall with an RBI single who helped Norwich earn the 2-0 lead heading into the third inning.
Shannon Moore started things off in the third inning, right where her team ended in the second, when she hit a lead off triple, only to be sent home when Gabby Mirabito hit a sacrifice fly out.
Kassidy Seary saw her fourth home run go her way later on in the third inning, to draw the score to 4-0, where it would remain for the game.
Airelle Jacquette also secured a hit for the Tornado in the game.
“Our bats went quiet,” said Moore when describing the batting the remainder of the seven inning game.
However, Moore noted that Hannah Eddy's pitching for the Tornado was key to carrying them to the win.
“Hannah pitched good, she had nine strikeouts, no walks, and only four hits allowed. And their pitcher Clair Laughlin pitched well tonight as well with eight strikeouts and no walks.”
Moore explained that following the recent loss to Chenango Forks last week, he told Eddy, “I told Hannah that on paper she won 1-0 in that game, the runs were all unearned. You just cant win games with those errors. So we need to keep playing error free.”
Up next for Norwich is Susquehanna Valley away later on today at 4:30 p.m., weather permitting.
This is a rematch of the opening day matchup, where Norwich suffered 7-0 loss at home to Susquehanna Valley.
“Didn’t lose anyone to vacation, first year that I haven’t had anyone going away. So we're in a position to stay competitive, If Hannah pitches her game that she can, and we have been working on some stuff with her,” said Moore. “Then as long as the bats are ready to go we can compete and that's all I can ask. Maybe they have a couple errors and we capitalize, then its a totally different game.”
