6OTS welcomes singer/songwriter Tret Fure Friday night

OXFORD – This Friday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m., Oxford's 6 On the Square is delighted to welcome Tret Fure back to its downtown stage.
Fure is legend in a number of music tribes–all of whom place deep value on her gorgeous songwriting, adept guitar playing, and beautiful voice–but we’ll bet you don’t know about the depth of her musical history.
She began her career at the age of 16 by singing in coffeehouses and campuses in the Midwest, then at age 19 Tret moved to LA in hopes of obtaining a record deal.  Within a year she was performing as guitarist and vocalist for Spencer Davis, touring with him and penning the single for his album “Mousetrap.” She went on to record her own album in 1973 on MCA/UNI Records with the late Lowell George of Little Feat as her producer. With the success of that release, she opened for Yes, Poco, and the J Geils Band.
Over the course of her 46-year career, Tret has released 15 recordings, including the recent “Rembrandt Afternoon.” In addition to being a gifted songwriter, Fure also engineered and produced countless recordings for a variety of artists, including her own.
In the early 80's, Tret began exploring the independent side of the industry and discovered the blossoming genre known as Women’s Music.  She recorded with and produced some of the best women’s music, including the legendary “Meg & Cris at Carnegie Hall” (1983). She and Cris Williamson performed as a duo throughout the 90s, and released 3 CDs together.
Now after seven acoustic releases on her own label, Tomboy girl Records, she has re-established herself in the folk world with a raft of awards and honors. Tret won the South Florida Folk Festival Singer/Songwriter Competition in two out of three categories - including Best Overall and Best Up-Tempo Song. That year also brought recognition via the prestigious Jane Schliessman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Women’s Music. Tret was voted “Pride In The Arts Favorite Female/Lesbian Musician,” and later that year she received the Janine C Rae Award for her work in Women’s Music.
Tret released the much anticipated “Rembrandt Afternoons” in 2015 to acclaim. We expected nothing less, but we’re happy to report that it was chosen by the iconic folk music show  Midnight Special as their album of the week and has been in heavy rotation around the country.  Her song “Riverbank” was #2 on the Acoustic Outpost charts, and the song “Rembrandt Afternoons” leapfrogged up charts as well.
Purchase tickets on-line at 6onthesquare.org at a discounted pre-show price of $18 until the date of the show, or for $20 at the door, and ticket prices for students 18 and under are always $2; please call 6OTS at 607-843-OTS6 to make a student reservation.
Doors open an hour before the start of the performance.
ART—The walls within 6OTS are brightened with the quilts of Janice Wolfe and Kim Betts. “These are not your grandmother’s quilts” said Betts of the exhibit. This accomplished mother-daughter duo interprets landscapes into exquisitely pieced works of art. They also take quilting beyond the common patterns of their foremothers into the sometimes abstract and colorful piecing seen in modern works of art. Quilters and non-quilters alike will appreciate not only the stitching but the interaction of colors and dimension displayed in the quilts.
