GREENE – Coming into Thursday's contest against Afton, Greene sat at 7-2 overall record, before suffering a crippling defeat at 17-5.
A trend of earning good at bats was started early when Afton's Greenwood nailed a solo home run in the first inning. Greenwood finished 5-6 with seven RBI's and two runs.
“You cant give free runs to a team like Afton. They were up 4-1 in the third inning, we had two outs, and the bases were loaded and my second basemen drops a routine fly ball,” said Greene head coach Rick Condon. “All three of those girls scored on that fly ball. You take those three runs away, we're out of that inning, then we get two more runs and its a 4-3 game instead.”
That five run inning for Afton in the third inning saw Afton winning over Greene 9-1, a deficit that just continued to grow as the game continued. Condon noted that errors – not many – but sporadic errors seemed to play into their collapse in the game.
“When they (errors) happened they scored and capitalized on those errors,” said Condon. “They’re (Afton) legitimate, they’re one of the teams to beat. But to compete you have to be 100% from start to end, they’ll take advantage of you if you lose focus.”
Greene saw their defense struggle with errors as well as with pitching and keep Afton's runnings from scoring, as Afton would score in every inning except the fifth.
A combined six strikeouts for Greene on the pitching side, compared to Afton's batting where they earned 18-hits on the evening was too much to stay competitive for the lady Trojans.
In the loss, Maddie Brink finished 3-4 with a run, McKenna Sergi finished 2-3 with a run, Alyssa Sands 1-4, and Lydia Howard finished 1-1 with two runs.

The following evening, Greene softball hosted their second powerhouse team in two days when they lost to Deposit 13-0.
“Up 3-0 in the first off of one of their girls three run home run. Then we held them at 3-0 all the way into the fifth,” said Condon.
The pitching that Greene saw from Lydia Howard on the day helped contribute to the game staying at 3-0 for the majority of the game, however, Deposit never quit as they did eventually manage to pack on the runs at the end of the game, scoring one in the fifth, five runs in the sixth and an additional four in the seventh.
“The wheels came off in the sixth and seventh inning, poor throws, poor catches,” said Condon. “First game that she has thrown, Lydia did very well. She did her job and made them fly out a lot, but we just weren’t getting the play from our defense. We need our number one defense that we had at the beginning of the season back.”
Condon noted that Deposits pitcher, Stiles, was a standout pitcher and helped decide the outcome of the matchup, saying, “Stiles is a good pitcher for class C, she is a good pitcher period, but I think she overwhelms people with how fast she pitches. In class C they aren’t used to that speed.”
After dropping their overall record to 7-4 after these two big losses, Greene will enjoy days off from practice today and this weekend in preparation for a Monday practice to get ready for a newly schedule matchup against Ithaca on Monday.
“My hope is we go into tuesdays game, play solid defense with no errors. They need to mentally focus out on defense, and if we beat this team, which we really could, that could be the turning point for us,” said Condon.
Greene saw only three girls record one hit each in the matchup against Stiles, with Jenna Harrington, Lydia Howard, and Maddie Brink each securing one.
Greene varsity softball will have the weekend off as coach Condon noted, but will assist with helping out the Junior Varsity at their home round robin tournament this Saturday April, 30. games for this tournament will be at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
Greene will be home next on Tuesday, May 3, to take on Ithaca at 4:30 p.m.
