14-year-old killed in Sherburne ATV rollover Thursday
SHERBURNE — A 14-year-old Madison youth was fatally injured in an ATV accident in the Town of Sherburne late Thursday evening, according to county officials.
Shortly before 8 p.m., the Chenango County 911 Center was alerted of the incident at 305 Blanding Road, approximately 2.5 miles southwest of the Village of Sherburne between the intersections of County Highway 23 and Steamsawmill Hill.
Advanced Life Support crews were requested to the scene, and LifeNet was requested to be placed on standby.
A swift response by the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) along with the Sherburne Fire Department, Norwich Fire Department and Cooperstown Medical Transport (CMT) ambulances to find the ATV operator after he had been pinned face down under the overturned ATV was initiated shortly thereafter.
“It appears the operator struck a piece of farm equipment causing the ATV to go over an embankment, said a CCSO spokesperson in a media release. “The operator was then thrown from the ATV and pinned under it.”
According to county dispatch records, the youth — whose identity was withheld — was non-responsive and in full arrest upon first responder arrival. He was subsequently transported by Norwich Ambulance to Chenango Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
According to Chenango Sheriff's Deputies, there was only one vehicle and driver involved in the accident, no other injuries were reported. Deputies indicated that the Village of Sherburne Police Department also assisted at the scene.
